A Wicked Awesome Day!

July 15, 2012
Kevin and I decided to take Emerson and Lisette to Boston today. Auntie Kathleen joined us for the first part of the day. After driving into Quincy and catching a T into the city we took a stroll through Quincy market for some initial sustenance (a bagel for the kids and a child clam chowdah for Kath) and then headed off to the aquarium. Emerson was so excited about what was next and occasionally (or frequently) neglected to enjoy what was right in front of him. But we did get to touch skates, look at African and Rockhopper penguins (my personal favorite), watch jellyfish with bioluminescence, look at baby sea horses, and see a scorpion fish.

After the aquarium we headed back to Quincy market for some lunch where we were besieged by a group of teenage girls headed by our very own Kayla. So the girls (including Kath) headed off to partake in their favorite pastime, shopping, and we decided to throw caution (and naps) to the wind and grab a T to Newbury St and the Public Gardens. Kevin and I were amazed by the beauty of the gardens and embarrassed to admit that this was the first visit for both of us. Emerson loved watching the ducks (especially the babies) and pretending to fish. After a while at the park (and a promise to return to the park to take a ride on one of the swan boats) we took a long stroll down Newbury admiring all the fashion and jewels. After a quick detour into Ben and Jerry’s to grab some ice cream and ride out a brief rain shower we headed back to the park dreaming of our upcoming ride on a swan boat. We arrived at the dock pleased to be the first people in line only to have our hopes dashed with these words: “Sorry folks, the last boat is out and we close at 5pm” (it was 5:02 at the time). We handled the disappointment by vowing to return to Boston and making the swans a priority. We spent some more time at the park, Lisette showing off her new walking skills and Emerson pretending to catch fish.

Finally, we headed back to Quincy market for dinner. After dinner Emerson received his inaugural “silly balloon animal hat” and we were officially branded “tourists.” Sadly, Emerson’s blue sword did not survive the initial decent down to the T station. Emerson was heartbroken, which obviously left both Kevin and I feeling heartbroken as well. No worries, though. Both the hat and the orange sword persevered and are still with us today as I write this post.

Goodnight Boston!
All in all it was a wonderful day and had the effect of reminding us how lucky we are to have such fantastic kids.

The Best $10 I Ever Spent

As you can see from the photos below, little kids do not need fancy to have fun. All it takes is some cheap plastic, a hot summer day, and a few good friends.

You didn't really expect captions did you? Those pictures (taken by the very talented Dr. Pelletier) are priceless - captions (even my extremely witty and engaging captions) could not do them justice.

Into the Wild

School is out for the summer and we here at the Vendetti-Pelletier house have decided to brave the wilderness in our Coleman 6 person tent. After our second local dinner on Saturday June 23 (I am dating this only because I have been very neglectful in keeping up with the blog and am writing this post on July 15 on a word doc due to the severe lack of internet at grammie’s and poppi’s house) we packed our bags Sunday morning and headed west on I-64. We arrived at Sherando Lake just after nap time and began the process of erecting what would become our primary domicile for the next 3-4 nights, depending of course on food reserves and black bear sightings. Emerson explored the creek behind our campsite and Lisette wore a whole in her pants scooting around checking things out. Once our tent was up we discovered a playground and the gorgeous fishing lake, which was located a short walk from our site.

Awww...
Ahhh!!!!

Following that excursion Kevin utilized his manly prowess to build a fire and cook a fantastic dinner of chicken, veggies, and potatoes. And because we were camping we had smores for dessert. Kevin and I were exhausted but the kids were raring to go and didn’t fall asleep until well after dark. Luckily the kids were asleep when the Black Bear came sniffing around the tent. Needless to say not Kevin and I did not sleep too soundly after that.
Mmm...
Weee...
The following day we headed down to the lake and while baby girls slept away the morning, Emerson played in the water and cheered on his dad as he caught a minnow in a net. That afternoon, as a way to encourage napping (unsuccessfully I might add), we headed to the Blue Ridge parkway to an altitude high enough to provoke a nasty case of Vertigo, which reared its ugly spinning head in the middle of the night. Sleeping in a tent is a challenge in and of itself but make said tent spin around and around and it becomes impossible. We also discovered that day that a nasty storm had hit Richmond and a giant limb off one of the trees in our backyard had fallen into out next door neighbor’s yard. Oh well, nothing hotdogs and smores can’t fix!

Smores... reason enough to go camping.
On Tuesday we headed into the Charlottesville to meet up with Rach and Avery and go for a hike. First things first, we carb loaded up on Bodo’s bagels. Emerson and Avery had a blast tossing rocks in the water and marveling at the local wildlife (2 frogs, a turtle, and a snake).

Wednesday morning we decided we had had enough of the wild (though Emerson was thoroughly disappointed and declared “I want to live here for ever!”) and headed back home.

All in all it was a wonderful trip and most likely the beginning of a yearly tradition (hopefully minus the tree destruction and Vertigo!)
